Farewell Sophia

Farewell Sophia

I wrote a love poem today: to my boat. This bothers me more than just a little bit. I’ve spent the last few years moving myself to a much more minimalist lifestyle (truly a “lifestyle” choice) and the thought of being attached to this hunk of fiber and metal is not what I expected. Don’t get me wrong; Sophia has been a great boat and home. And the blog and organization that inherited her name will press on. But as…

Consider a Gift – We have work to do

Consider a Gift – We have work to do

Dear Fellow Sojourners, As we approach the end of 2016 and look forward to all that 2017 has in store, I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks. Your support and encouragement have made this an unforgettable year.      I am also asking you consider offering a final gift to Sophia Sojourn for 2016.  Immediate needs include travel expenses, book inventory, upcoming renewals of web sites, etc. Any gift of any amount will help offset those costs….

Question #11: Who is Sophia Sojourn?

Question #11: Who is Sophia Sojourn?

(note: scroll to the bottom of the post for the audio version!) That is a very legitimate question. In fact it has come to me in many forms. “That’s a great blog post you shared, please tell Sophia how much I enjoyed it.” “I saw that blog post, I can’t find anyone named Sophia Sojourn on Facebook though” The answer to the question is simple: Sophia is not a “who” but rather a “what.” To be very specific, it is…

Welcome to Our New Home

Welcome to Our New Home

I’m nearly finished with the migration from the WordPress hosted site to our new home on our self-hosted site. There will be a bunch of advantages to this move, but in the meantime there may be some broken links and other issues. I’ve noticed this is specifically true with the links on the FaceBook page. If you’re looking for one of the links below, just click here and it will take you to the site. I’ll keep looking for the…

Upgrades

Upgrades

Sophia Sojourn is going to be experiencing some much needed upgrades in the comings days. There may be some outages. In which case you can’t read this post and it’s a moot point. But if you’re reading this now and you come back later – you may have issues. OR – in an alternate universe the upgrade will go smoothly and without a bug or a hitch and you will never know the difference. Here’s hoping.

Drops

Drops

I sat awake last night memorized by the gentle rainfall. Rain is always a mixed blessing on the boat. On the one hand the drops hitting the tin roof that covers the slips create their own sort of meditative melody. It’s a somewhat natural song that combines with the wind and the tiny splashes of rain drops hitting to lake itself creating a musical effect that shouts both strength and peace in one single verse. On the other hand, the…

Happy Birthday, Sophia!

Happy Birthday, Sophia!

A year ago today I was struggling to truly find my voice. My friend, Rita, had come over for dinner on the boat. As we talked through the evening, she encouraged me to write. I had randomly posted some thoughts in some Facebook groups that she thought were share worthy. I wasn’t necessarily convinced, but I know that writing them had been therapeutic for me. I had set up blogs before, mostly for other people. It occurred to me that…

Water

Water

There is a reason I live on the water. I’ve always found peace in it. I love the creatures that share their lake with me. I love the gentle motions of the boat. I love the sounds of the docks, the ducks, and the older boats creaking as they rock. But I was reminded tonight of one of the biggest reasons I love being near the water. I’ve been battling depression on and off – mostly on – for the…
